London Thursday 21st January 2010 Crisis Commons, an international volunteer network of professionals that respond to crisis around the world, now has a dedicated London base. Crisis Commons London launches today with a Crisis Camp devoted to helping build vital IT tools for the Haiti disaster. Today’s Crisis Camp will consist of a brief situational report on Haiti and a practical outline of how the Crisis Camps will work and what is needed from volunteers.

Crisis Commons London has been set up by development specialists Vinay Gupta, creator of the Hexayurt (http://hexayurt.com/_), and Mark Simpkins of Africa Gathering (http://www.africagathering.org.uk ). Crisis Commons organisers seek requests for technological support from governments and NGOs and then organise teams to support those requests.

Crisis Commons London is looking to establish a larger core team who will be able to help coordinate with other Crisis Commons groups across the globe and establish facilities in London for the Camps. The Commons also needs more volunteers to help provide specific technical services including application development, coding, mapping support and data acquisition.

Mark Simpkins said “We are calling upon the technology community to help establish a solid Crisis Commons in London. We aim to get a team of people together who are passionate about how technology and their skills can help in global response to crisis. Imagine the potential a group like this could have.”

Vinay Gupta said “What we create is open-source – meaning that it’s free for anyone to use, the labour has been donated, and the user community is encouraged to take it and build on it … to make it work for them”
